Child Safety

We, At Blinds4Value take Child Safety extremely seriously and fully support the ‘Make It Safe’ campaign promoted and highlighted by The British Blind & Shutter Association.
Since early 2014 with the new EU legislation it had become law that the companies who are involved with the manufacturing, selling and installing of blinds to comply under EN13120, making non-compliance to this standard illegal, and a criminal offence.
We Shadow Curtains and Blinds manufacture, supply and install blinds complying with the child safety requirements of BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014 Blinds. We use easy break chain connectors and cord tidies to keep looped chains securely fixed out of the way or offer other ‘Safe by Design’ solutions for our customers . All our blinds are packed with safety instructions and child safety devices are included.
Mandatory requirements of the new standard;

  • Installation of child safe blinds to ALL HOMES whether children are present or not
  •  Limitations on cord and chain lengths
  •  Safety devices for preventing any cords or chains from creating a hazardous loop
  • The fitting of safety devices on cords and chains at the point of manufacture
  • The testing of all safety critical components of internal blinds
  • Safety warnings and product instructions

What do you need to do, Mandatory requirements?

 Young children can be strangled by loops in pull cords, chains, tapes and inner cords that operate the product. To avoid strangulation and entanglement, keep cords out of the reach of young children. Cords may become wrapped around a child’s neck.

  • Move beds, cots, highchairs and playpens away from window covering cords and chains.
  • Make sure all cords and chains are always secured out of reach of babies and young children. Do not tie cords or chains together. Make sure cords or chains do not twist and create a loop
  • Move furniture away from window covering cords and chains as children love to climb.

1. Buy ‘Safe by Design’ Blinds
A blind which is safe by design is one that is cordless or has concealed or tensioned cords. Typically these products are pushed or pulled into position.

  • Motorised blinds,
  • Wand operated vertical or venetian blinds (Blinds can be pushed and pulled into position by this wand),
  • Tensioned pleated blinds (all cords are held under tension and the blind is just pushed or pulled into position)
  • Spring operated roller blinds ( traditional spring loaded blind will be raised and lowered via a centre pull cord attached to the fabric bottom bar),

are all available at Shadow Curtains and Blinds as ‘Safe by Design’ Solutions as they remove the need for operating cords.

2. Buy Blinds with In-built safety systems
In-built safety systems are those that are built into the product and so do not require additional installation or operation in use. If your window sizes or shapes are not allowing you to choose a cordless window blinds or if you especially want to co-ordinate with your existing blinds, then chooses a blind style with an in-built safety device, such as a chain break connector where the chain is designed to separate under any undue pressure. Breakaway tassels at the bottom of cords work in the same way.

3. Buy blinds with a separate safety systems
Separate safety systems are those that require additional installation or operation in use. If cordless options or those with inbuilt safety devices are not suitable for your specific situation then the only alternative is to use a blind with a separate safety device such as a tensioning system or an accumulation device like a cleat. Make sure the device is securely fitted and always used.
Note: By law there are limitations on cord and chain lengths for separate safety systems.

Cord/Chain tidy’s & tensioners; these devices should be securely fixed to an adjacent surface and at the maximum distance from the top of the blind so the cords and/or chains are held permanently taut by the device.

 Chains & Cords Lengths and Operations;

  • Height of the blind or track, this determines how long the chain or cord can be. The bottom loop of the chain or cord must be 150cms from the floor and secured with a safety device, without the safety device the product is not compliant and should not be fitted.

For Example, headrail installation height 2.10mts, chain/cord length will be 60cms maximum.

  • If chain/cord has a breakaway device then the bottom loop of the cord/chain can be 60cms from the floor.
  • Low Level Blinds:  If the installation height of the blind is less than or around 150cms from the floor then an operating chain with a maximum loop of 20cms can be used. Although the bottom loop of the chain will be closer than the allowed 150cms, the 20cm maximum size loop is deemed to have removed the hazard.
  • When the fitting height is not known cord or chain should be less than or equivalent to 100cms, or 2/3 of the drop of the blind. Accumulation and tension devices should be installed a min 150 cms from the floor. Therefore it will involve a cord and chain length adjusting on the site by a professional installer.
